The Year of Many Firsts
In summer 2015, I moved to the Czech Republic to take a course for teaching English. Almost a year since my move, I can now reflect on what has so far been an eventful experience.
I lived in Prague for the duration of the four week TEFL course and I had a great time while I was there, but since then, I have been living and working in a small town in South Bohemia called Strakonice. A most unlikely place to find an Irishman. It has been a year of firsts for me. First attempt at snowboarding, first pet dog (Tici), first genuine attempt at learning a foreign language, first engagement (hopefully the only one!!!) and although teaching English isn’t my first job, I can truthfully say it’s the first job I genuinely enjoy.
Since completing the course I have been bombarded with opportunities, both professional and otherwise. I have managed to play music in various bars in Prague, I have completed a second TEFL course online and most importantly, I’ve met some amazing friends.
Whether it’s for the qualification, a year out or a permanent move, I cannot recommend undertaking a TEFL course in Prague enough. For a qualification that you’ll have forever and experiences lasting just as long, it’s worth stepping out of your comfort zone.
